Share Your Printer with Other Macs

Today's tech tip is in response to reader question: "I have a few Macs in my home office with a single printer. What's the easiest way to allow each Mac print to one printer? I don't know networking so I hope there is an easy way."

Good news, Jessica... sharing a printer on the network is as easy as checking a box! Here's how.

First, you'll need to share your printer with other Macs on the network. To do this, open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners on the Mac with the printer connected to it. Next, locate and select the printer that you want to share with other Macs on the network. Once selected, you need to check the box on the right called "Share this printer on the network".

Congratulations! Your Mac is now a print server for other Macs on the network.

Accessing and using this shared printer from another Mac is just as easy. When you're ready to print a document, go to File > Print... like you normally would. From here, you will now see the shared printer in your list of nearby printers.

Once you have selected the printer, you'll want to go ahead and print the document. Not only will this print the document, but it will also add the shared printer to your list of available printers for use next time.

Want to share your printer so that you can print to it from an iPad or iPhone? Follows these simple instructions.
